Henry Cowell.
Henry Cowell of Massachusetts came to California during the Gold Rush and made his fortune in the lime industry. Lime and timber were abundant natural resources in Santa Cruz County in the 1800s and early 1900s. Bricks made from lime quickly began to replace lumber as a primary building material. Henry Cowell owned and operated four kilns throughout Santa Cruz, owned large expanses of land, and raised cattle. He was reported in 1886 as the wealthiest man in Santa Cruz County. By 1899, Cowell owned 10,000 acres of land, a large portion of which now makes up Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.
