Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is only an hour drive from Santa Cruz. Situated in what was once a sardine cannery, this world-class aquarium provides an incredible fish-eye view of over 35,000 extraordinary sea creatures. Peer through the world's largest window to get an underwater view of a massive kelp forest and the many fish that call it home. Or, get a feel for the open ocean as fish swim through over a million gallons of sea water in the Outer Bay exhibit.

Local Tips

Avoid Crowds –

Try to go during the week if you can, and arrive early. If you're visiting with young ones, head for the Touch Pools as soon as you arrive; the animals must rest later in the day.

Buy a Membership –

If you live in Northern California, consider a membership—it will pay for itself after two visits, and members can enter 30 minutes before the aquarium opens to the general public.

Order Ahead –

Order your Monterey Bay Aquarium tickets online and pick them up at Will Call. This will save you from having to wait in the ticket line. Reserve tour tickets ahead of time, too.

Check the Schedule –

Check the feeding schedules and auditorium show times immediately upon arrival. This will allow you to plan your visit accordingly.

Parking

Parking is available at the Cannery Row garage, located at 601 Foam Street between Hoffman and Prescott. The parking is $1.50 per half-hour with an $18 maximum. The first hour is free and credit is accepted.

What are the most popular exhibits?

Kelp Forest and Outer Bay are the two most popular staples. The Kelp forest features a 30 foot tall glass window and gives you a fish's eye view of the world under the sea. The Outer Bay has featured Great White sharks in the past, so be on the lookout.
